Washcare Symbols
A Washcare Symbol is one of the standardized care icons that print on the label sewn into every garment — machine wash, dry clean only, tumble dry low, do not bleach. The master in GarmentFlow holds the library of these symbols and lets you attach them to Fabrics, which in turn attach them to Tech Packs, which in turn print them onto care labels.
GarmentFlow comes preinstalled with the full standard set — 61 symbols across washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, dry cleaning and wringing, following the ISO/GINETEX convention. Most factories never touch this master after day one.
[!TIP] Did you Know? That based on the compositions selected, GarmentFlow will decide which composition best fits your fabric. This is not an exact science and you should always overide the response with washcare instructions given to you by the fabric supplier.
The preinstalled symbols
Everything below is seeded on install and ready to attach to a Fabric. The everyday handful — a wash temperature, Do not bleach, Tumble dry low, Iron medium — covers most labels; the rest are here when a fabric needs them.

The fields
Each Washcare Symbol record has:
- Code — a short identifier (e.g.,
wh-washing-30deg,wh-bleaching-not-allowed). - Title — the human-readable name (e.g., "Wash at 30°C", "Do not bleach").
- Category — one of Washing, Bleaching, Drying, Iron, Drycleaning, Wring, Custom.
- Description — fuller text about what the symbol means.
- Image URL — the actual icon image that prints on the label.
The category drives ordering on a label — washing symbols print before drying symbols, which print before iron symbols, and so on. The standard convention.
How washcare reaches a finished garment
The flow is:
- Washcare Symbol master holds the library of all symbols.
- On a Fabric record, the Washcare tab lists which symbols apply to this fabric.
- A Tech Pack picks a Fabric, inheriting its washcare.
- The care label print format for that Tech Pack pulls the washcare symbols and renders them onto the label.
You manage washcare on the Fabric, not on the Tech Pack — that way two Tech Packs using the same fabric automatically share washcare without duplicate entry.
When to create a custom symbol
The Custom category exists for symbols that aren't part of the standard ISO/GINETEX set — brand-specific icons, regional variations, or non-care symbols you want to print onto a label. Use it sparingly. Most "I need a custom symbol" requests turn out to be cases where a standard symbol already exists; the work to track down the right standard symbol is usually less than the work to maintain a custom one.
